Here are some great tips for loose curls. My hair is on the thicker side so I curl the bottom half first and then the top half. I like to use a 1 1/4 inch barrel curling iron.
Step 1: Take a piece of hair about 1-1 1/2 inches wide.
Step 2: Make sure you are positioning the curling iron correctly. This is the most important thing! You always want to curl away from the face. That means your wrist should be moving away from your face when curling. If you are right handed (like me) curling the right side of the hair may feel a little awkward for your wrist at first. After practicing it will become a lot easier. Just remember to start with the back of the curling iron towards your face and pull the hair through the clamp away from your face towards the back of your head.
Step 3: Pull the curling iron all the way through the hair once.
Step 4: Starting about half way down the hair, begin twisting and pulling the curling iron all the way down through the piece of hair.
Step 5: Repeat for all of the hair.
