Hello lovelies! Today we bring you an easy and cute way to make over any piece of furniture! If you have a piece of furniture that is desperately needing some attention or if you just want to spice it up a bit try this tutorial!
My husband and I recently inherited an old desk that was begging for some attention. I knew right when I saw it that it had potential. I know I wanted to use my chalk paint recipe. (You can see it below)
I love using chalk paint!! It's so easy and if you use my recipe it is so much cheaper than buying actual chalk paint because it can get pricy. With chalk paint you don't even have to SAND or PRIME! That is why I love it so much. A lot of times I don't have time to do all the extra stuff. I just want to paint and be done with it. Tip: When you first put the chalk paint on, it usually looks a little gritty but it dries smooth.
Here is the picture of what the desk looked like before.

For this desk because it was so old it had a lot of dirt and stains on it so I decided to sand it. It only helps with the adhesion of paint if you feel like sanding. So first step is to mix up the chalk paint.
Chalk Paint Recipe:
1. Any type of interior paint. Choose whatever color!
2. 2 Tablespoons Plaster of Paris. You can buy it at Home Depot or Lowes.
3. 2 Tablespoons of hot water
4. Mix together well and your done!
Make sure your area is clean before you start painting. Start by doing the first coat, use any brush that you would like. I like using the Wooster Shortcut 2 inch brush that you can find here. I usually use 3 coats of paint when I do chalk paint. To get that professional smooth look with your paint jobs I like to use a sponge roller. I just roll it over after every coat. Work in small sections. I like using this one here.
The colors that I used was Behr Creamy White. I have used it for many projects and absolutely love it! I used Sherwin Williams Sea Salt on the chair. I LOVE Sea Salt as well, I use it a lot throughout my house for pops of color. I like having some kind of contrast with my projects and the sea salt just brings that out.
When I finished I just used Minwax finishing clear wax on it. I usually use Minwax polycrylic water based protective finished. It really is the best product out there to use on furntiture. I had just ran out it and didn't feel like going to the store hehe. You can find the link to it here. Polycrylic makes it so your piece dosent yellow over time and it puts a really nice finish on it. I have used it for almost every project I have done. I use about 3-5 coats on it depending on how often I use the piece.
Here is the finished project! I absolutely LOVED how it turned out! A little obsessed :)
We hope you enjoy it! If you have any questions about repainting furniture just let us know!
Sincerely,
Jean
